BDayspastFrom the moment we are conceived the process of aging begins.  First we develop in our mother’s womb, getting ready to be born and face the world.  At the beginning we are helpless and completely depend on others for our care.  As long as we are alive all kinds of development and changes are constantly taking place in our bodies.  It is all a marvelous and awesome mystery.  Why is it that the stage where wrinkles and gray hair appear has become a horror to be avoided at all cost?  Our thinning and gray hair must be camouflaged; our sagging skin and wrinkles must be taken care of chemically or surgically.  Being told that we don’t look our age or old enough to be our children’s parent is a welcomed compliment.  Looking young is the ultimate goal.  This used to apply mostly to women, but men today are equally obsessed with looking young.

Aging is such a privilege – why is it so unappreciated?  Why do we cling to youth so desperately?  Every gray hair and every wrinkle should be considered a prize for goals we have met and hurdles we have overcome.   We should be proud and celebrate that we have made it this far and look forward to the rest of our lives with joy and purpose.

If only……….  However, I am not quite ready to bring out the champagne – My hair has a few meetings with Clairol in its agenda and my skin thirsts for creams and concealers hoping that even if I don’t astound people by how young I look, at least they won’t be shocked that I’m still alive.

Today I rejoice – only one more year to Medicare!!!!
